A 21-year-old Kentucky college student teamed up with her mother to make face masks that help protect against COVID-19, with plastic panels to help the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, according to an article on the Lex18 website.
“I felt like there was a huge population that was being looked over,“ Ashely Lawrence was quoted in the article as saying. “We’re all panicking right now and so a lot of people are just not being thought of. So, I felt like it was very important that, even at a time like this, people need to have that communication.”
Lawrence and her mother used bed sheets and a roll of plastic fabric to construct the masks using their sewing machine. She’s also experimenting with masks that wrap around the head or neck for people with cochlear implants.
