A bill introduced by Senator Dennis Baxley (R) requiring private insurers to cover the cost of hearing aids for children diagnosed with hearing loss, passed unanimously in the Florida Senate last week, according to an article on the WFLA website.
SB 498 stipulates that “’a health insurer issuing an individual policy that provides major medical or similar comprehensive coverage for a dependent child’ to cover hearing aids at $3,500 per ear for two years, including at least six ear molds over that same period,” according to WFLA.
Further, if the child’s prescription changes or he/she “experiences a significant and unexpected change” in hearing loss that cannot be remedied with the existing hearing device, the two-year period will restart, with full benefits and coverage, the article says.
