The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India, will soon perform a human clinical trial for what is reportedly the “world’s cheapest cochlear implant,” according to an article in the The Tribune.
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was tasked with developing a lower cost version of the implant, whose imported parts were initially deemed to be cost prohibitive.
“The human trial for cochlear implants by the PGI is underway. All four medical institutes performed their first surgery recently. Each institute has to perform 10 cases in order to see the viability of the project,” Dr Naresh K Panda, Head of the Department of Otolaryngology, was quoted as saying during a press conference at the PGIMER.
