A new webinar, courtesy of Hamilton CapTel, looks at the hearing-related needs of veterans as well as their unique personal, cultural, psychological, and physical characteristics and co-morbidities—and it presents solutions on how we might be able to help them better—all from the perspective of 20-year military veteran Sean Lehman. It also provides information about the “Heroes with Hearing Loss” initiative, which serves as a platform of engagement and solutions for our veterans, and is dedicated to raising awareness and initiating meaningful dialog about hearing loss experiences among veterans, their families, and friends.
Hearing loss and tinnitus are two of the top military service-related injuries that affect veterans, according to a 2015 Annual Benefits Report from the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs. In addition to hearing loss, many veterans also simultaneously experience one or more chronic conditions, including psychological distress, that can affect how hearing care treatment is tailored. As a hearing care practitioner, it’s critical that you’re aware of the various comorbidities to hearing loss that veterans may experience as well as the aspects of military culture that may preclude individuals from seeking assistance for hearing difficulties.
This webinar outlines the reasons why veterans delay hearing loss treatment, the complexities of their condition, and solutions that hearing care professionals can put into practice for effective and holistic care. It stresses the importance of gaining your patient’s trust, so that he or she will be receptive to treatment.

I served in the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division during the 70’s.
I have always been told that my hearing loss was not covered by the VA and that I needed to find a civilian doctor.
Have things changed ?
I am a 22year vet. USCG. I have not signed up for VA benifits because I’ve been told I can’t qualify if I earn to much. I’m retired from all work and collecting disability from social security $2,200 and a $425.00 pention from retired USCG. I am trying to get hearing aids and I would like to know if I qualify for any VA. help? Thank You Ron Cinalli
Ron,
The VA will only accept their initial evaluation to consider qualifying your case. I strongly urge you to contact a veterans organization like VFW to assist you.
