On Friday, November 13, the White House used an ASL interpreter during a COVID-19 briefing for the first time, according to a report on the ABC 7 WJLA website.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) recently won a federal lawsuit that now compels the government, effective October 1, to include ASL interpreters as part of coronavirus briefings as well as on the White House’s live web feed, according to ABC 7 WJLA.
In an interview with NAD CEO Howard Rosenblum, he said, prior to the lawsuit, there was an “information gap for many of us in the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Many of the governors were having daily, weekly briefings, obviously presidential briefings task force briefings and we weren’t getting information, the captions were not enough for many members of the community.”
