The community captions feature on YouTube—which allows users to add subtitles to videos—will be discontinued as of September 28, according to an article on The Verge. According to an update on YouTube’s Help page, the feature was “rarely used and had problems with spam/abuse.”
Some deaf and hard-of-hearing users object to YouTube’s decision, saying it will hinder accessibility, and are petitioning the company to provide a fix for the issues rather than simply getting rid of the feature. The captions were also used to translate foreign languages, and users have said that utilizing their own captions would be cost prohibitive.
