The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts—a chartered military organization—settled with a man who alleged that he now has permanent hearing loss and tinnitus after attending a group event where howitzers were fired, according to an article in the Boston Globe.
A. Michael Davallou alleged in his lawsuit that he immediately felt pain in both ears after hearing the firing, which was followed by symptoms of hyperacusis a few days later. An engineer hired by Davallou to measure the sound of howitzer fire from the annual ceremony, found that it reached a minimum of 145-155 decibels, according to the article, enough to potentially cause hearing damage.
